Use of 3-Amino-l,2,4-triazole To Reduce Body Catalase Activity in Cancer Studies* ROBERT N . FEINSTEIN AND JULIA L. DAINKO

چکیده
Heim, Appleman, and Pyfrom (1~) first showed that injection of the herbicide 3-amino-l,~,4triazole (AT) strikingly reduced the catalase activity of the liver, but not of the erythrocyte. This has since been amply confirmed (6, 13, 18), and it has been shown (6, 18) that AT per se is not an inhibitor of catalase but will, upon incubation in vitro, reduce the catalase activity of crude tissue preparations. The chief interest of AT, from the oncologists' point of view, is that it resembles the tumor toxohormone of Nakahara and Fukuoka (17) in its differential effect on the eatalase of the liver, but not of the erythrocyte. The present paper represents an at tempt to answer the following questions: (a) Why does AT affect the catalase of solid tissues but not of blood? (b) Is it possible to maintain a prolonged low level of total body catalase by the use of AT? (c) If such a low level is obtained and maintained, will a tumor implanted in such an animal be any more sensitive to fed hydrogen peroxide (14) or to irradiation, as recently suggested by Warburg (19, ~0)?

Cancer Survivorship: Moving the Science and Art of Research and Care Beyond Cure - March 31, 2003
Good afternoon, Senator Brownback and Senator Feinstein. I am Julia Rowland, Ph. D., Director of the Office of Cancer Survivorship (OCS) at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). I am pleased to appear before you today to describe the history of the National Cancer Institute's Office of Cancer Survivorship and to share with you the breadth of activities currently supported by the NCI addressing t...
متن کاملProgressive nigrostriatal terminal dysfunction and degeneration in the engrailed1 heterozygous mouse model of Parkinson's disease
Current research on Parkinson's disease (PD) pathogenesis requires relevant animal models that mimic the gradual and progressive development of neuronal dysfunction and degeneration that characterizes the disease. Polymorphisms in engrailed 1 (En1), a homeobox transcription factor that is crucial for both the development and survival of mesencephalic dopaminergic neurons, are associated with sp...
متن کاملGains from diversification on convex combinations: A majorization and stochastic dominance approach
By incorporating both majorization theory and stochastic dominance theory, this paper presents a general theory and a unifying framework for determining the diversification preferences of risk-averse investors and conditions under which they would unanimously judge a particular asset to be superior. In particular, we develop a theory for comparing the preferences of different convex combination...
متن کاملImproved immunogenicity of tetanus toxoid by Brucella abortus S19 LPS adjuvant.
BACKGROUND Adjuvants are used to increase the immunogenicity of new generation vaccines, especially those based on recombinant proteins. Despite immunostimulatory properties, the use of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as an adjuvant has been hampered due to its toxicity and pyrogenicity. Brucella abortus LPS is less toxic and has no pyrogenic properties compared to LPS from other gram negati...
متن کاملSteady electrodiffusion in hydrogel-colloid composites: macroscale properties from microscale electrokinetics.
A rigorous microscale electrokinetic model for hydrogel-colloid composites is adopted to compute macroscale profiles of electrolyte concentration, electrostatic potential, and hydrostatic pressure across membranes that separate electrolytes with different concentrations. The membranes are uncharged polymeric hydrogels in which charged spherical colloidal particles are immobilized and randomly d...
